Chateau-sur-Mer is a National Historic Landmark and Newport’s first true mansion, built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore. Its grand scale and lavish parties helped usher in Newport’s Gilded Age, and today visitors can explore its 19th-century stories via a self-guided audio tour, a GPS-guided landscape tour, and a virtual tour. Free onsite parking is available; note that the house is not wheelchair-accessible.
