About Historic Summit Tunnel
Opened on November 30, 1867 after two years of blasting, the 1,659-foot Summit Tunnel (#6) at Donner Pass was used continuously for 130 years by the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and Amtrak before being bypassed. Built largely by Chinese labor and flanked by historic stone “Chinese Walls” and later concrete snow sheds, the site offers views of Donner Lake from nearby vantage points and stands as a significant piece of transcontinental railroad history.
